About Me

Picture
I have been groomed to become a business leader. I posses strong analytical skills, I think critically, and I have an artist's drive; along with a winning smile, and shining personality! I can recognize and analyze a problem, and then devise a cost effective solution. I have learned to push myself and take the initiative, which allows me to produce impressive results without supervision. I welcome challenging tasks because I view the project as a chance to get out of my comfort zone and expand my knowledge and skill set. A Geologist that leads, motivates, and produces results. Simply put, I'm a Geologist that speaks Business, or a Businessman that speaks Geology. Either way, I can be a dynamic and indispensable member of your team.

First, let me introduce myself...

My name is Michael Jordon Haubert, but I've been going by "Jordon" my entire life. I was raised in the Alief area of Houston, Texas. Specifically, an area called the "International District." Despite the heat and the humidity, being raised in Houston was a great experience. Just by walking down the street I was able to encounter people from all over the world, which sparked my curiosity and respect for other cultures at a very early age. I am comfortable and competent when working with people from different cultures and different countries. I feel that growing up in Houston has given me a window into the global community, as well as insight on how to work cooperatively with people whose values and culture are vastly different from my own.
I grew up in southwest Houston and attended schools in Alief. Although I was an average student, I was always more interested in learning than in sports, I've never been overly  competitive athletically, rather I enjoyed science fairs and history fairs more than football. I've always had an interest in math and science, as well as history, and geography. Basically, I've always enjoyed learning. I am a nerd and I'm proud of it. I spent half of my summers at the Zoo, or the Houston Museum of Natural Science, discovering new and interesting phenomena about our natural world. The other summer tradition was when my family and I would go on vacation. Most of the time we went to the Hill Country of central Texas in order to escape the humidity of Houston. This area is where I first went hiking, and subsequently found the rock that started my rock collection. It is a piece of petrified wood with quartz crystals on the top, and microcrystalline quartz on the bottom. I still have it to this day. Other than rock collecting, I also enjoy travel, photography, writing, and various other outdoor activities.

After high school, I went to college in Arizona. I realized that I did not know what I wanted to do with my life, and so I withdrew from school and moved back to Houston.

Once again, my family and I went to the Hill Country on vacation. We went swimming in the Comal River where I found a rock with a fossil in it. I was completely enthralled, I wanted to know everything about that rock. I did some research online and found out that the fossil lived during the Cretaceous age, when a warm and shallow sea stretched from the present day Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean. Finally I knew what I wanted to do. I decided to go to school for geology. My first choice was Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, near where I found the fossil. I was surprised to learn that while Texas State offered a couple of introductory geology courses, they did not offer a degree in geology. So, I looked for a small college in an area known for geology that offered a degree in the subject. That is when I found Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. Sul Ross and Alpine are located just north of Big Bend National Park, a bastion of varied and interesting geology. After my first class of Introductory Physical Geology, I knew I was in the right place.

I completed my Bachelor of Science in Geology in 2009 and started working on a Master's degree. Life intervened and made matters a bit more complicated and so I left Sul Ross and the pursuit of my Master's degree in order to begin working in the oil field. I was soon offered a position at a small exploration and production (E&P) company in Houston. I decided to take the job and enroll at the University of Houston in order to complete a Master's degree. I found a project that I was interested in and talked about different topics for a thesis with my advisor. Soon I was off to write my proposal. Unfortunately, by the time my proposal was finished, my thesis advisor lost funding for the project, and so, I had to find a new advisor. Unfortunately, no other advisors were taking on new students and I would have to wait a semester or two and start over completely. Instead, I decided to take the advice of a few of my friends and get back to the action. So I transferred to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

I completed my Master of Science in Geology in the summer of 2015 at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin with a thesis and a 4.0 GPA. Unfortunately, the price of oil was in free fall and continued its nose dive. I looked for work in and around the Midland - Odessa area, but everyone was feeling the pinch of $26 oil. I spoke to several geologists and engineers who told me that the best thing to do was to go back to school to learn another aspect of the industry, most suggesting business. I also sat down with the vice president of exploration for a small, independent E&P in Midland. She suggested I pursue an MBA rather than just any business degree. She explained that obtaining an MBA helped her get named the vice president of exploration, which sold me on the prospect. I asked her recommendation for schools, and she suggested the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, where she earned her MBA. I did my due diligence and researched schools that would be a good fit. It so happens that the University of Texas of the Permian Basin has an outstanding, internationally recognized MBA program. UT- Permian Basin's MBA program is also one of only a handful that offer a specialization in Energy Business. I wasted no time and enrolled in the program immediately.
After taking my first couple of business courses I realized two things. The first, I was greatly surprised by how much I enjoyed my business classes. I found that I enjoy business almost as much, and for many of the same core reasons, as I enjoy geology. The second, I am incredibly adept at business concepts, and practice. I find myself "thinking like a businessman" about nearly everything now. I thought that taking business courses would be a struggle for me, especially having to switch gears from a physical science, but I'm finding that I'm taking to it like a fish to water.

Presently, I am pursuing a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin with a specialization in Energy Business and Finance. I am also currently looking to start my career in either oil and gas, or a traditional managerial role in a different industry.
