Graduate Thesis

Being a geologist is similar to being a detective. You have to be very analytical and meticulous in order to solve the mystery you're investigating. A core can tell you everything you need to know about the area of interest that you are examining, you only need patience, and the ability to recognize the clues. It's a very intense and involved puzzle that tells an engrossing story of a section of the earth. I'm mostly interested in Sedimentary Petrology and Stratigraphy which is an expensive word for the study of Sedimentary rocks and structures and how and in what depositional environments do they form. My thesis was in the realm of Sedimentary Petrology and Stratigraphy, it is fascinating. Sedimentary Petrology and Stratigraphy have countless application in the oil and gas industry as well as with Planetary Geology, in the study of sedimentary processes on Mars, and other planets.

I completed my Master of Science degree with a Thesis at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in August of 2015. I am usually a very humble person, but I am very proud of this accomplishment. Most of my friends took the easy way out and chose the non-thesis option. It was fairly popular, one and a half years and you'd be done, even a couple of professors tried to talk me into taking the non-thesis option. I didn't feel that I would have obtained a Master of Science in Geology if I went down the easier road. President Kennedy in his speech at Rice University in Houston said, "We choose to go to the moon... and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win..." Being a science nerd and growing up in Houston, I've heard that speech more than once, and I've also visited NASA more than once. Choosing not to do something because it is hard is not something that resonates with me, and it never has. I feel that by taking the more difficult path I have adapted and grown in an intellectual sense. Obviously, in a results driven industry you want an easy and streamlined way to produce profits; however, learning how to streamline the process and make it easy could be difficult. Where others shy away, I run headlong and shine.
My thesis, Subsurface Analysis and Cycle Stratigraphy of the Upper Cambrian Wilberns Formation, Western Llano Uplift Region, McCulloch County, Texas with Comparison to Wilberns on Outcrop, is an analysis and description of a mineral core taken in McCulloch county, in central Texas. The Wilberns formation has been described on the surface for over a century since it was first described. However, there had been no previous work done on the Wilberns formation in the subsurface. The project was daunting, but ultimately worth the blood, sweat, and tears that went into its completion.

My thesis is available at the UT-Permian Basin library, or I can provide a digital copy on a CD at your request , just contact me.
