When I finished my Master of Science in Geology, the price per barrel was in free fall. Speaking to an exploration geologist that had risen to VP of Exploration for a small independent E&P in Midland, I realized that an MBA would be very beneficial. A business degree will open more doors, and make me a more versatile member of a company. I believe that I am getting ahead of the curve, in that I will be able to use business strategies in geology, and skills that helped me become a geologist will ensure that my business acumen is a step ahead and above my peers on the business side of the industry.
I chose to return to the University of Texas - Permian Basin for my MBA for multiple reasons. Primarily, UT - Permian Basin's MBA program is internationally accredited through AACSB International, along with the University of Texas - Austin, University of Houston, Baylor University, University of Notre Dame, and Harvard University among others. However, it's what those other schools do not offer that made up my mind. UT - Permian Basin is one of only a handful of business schools in the country that offer a specialization in Energy Business. As a geologist with experience in the Oil & Gas Industry, what concentration could be better?
Some business concepts are still new to me. I enjoy the courses immensely, and I am excelling in my pursuit of an MBA.
While I will not be writing a thesis for my MBA, I have completed numerous projects that showcase the concepts that were discussed in class and through reading the text. One project, discussing the intricacies of using Eli Goldratt's Thinking Process associated with solving the problems of a pharmaceutical inventory management system. I worked within a multidisciplinary team of highly experienced and educated individuals and we came up with some compelling arguments. Our professor was so impressed, he asked if we were interested in publishing our work; we are currently preparing the work for publication in our spare time.
