Hiking & Camping

Hiking and Camping almost go hand in hand. Sure, you can go Camping, and not go hiking, and you can go hiking, but not be camping. However, when the two are combined, there is no experience like it. To paraphrase one of my favorite quotes from John Muir, in a walk through the woods, one always receives far more than they seek. I don't know what it is about sleeping under the stars at night, rising with the sun, and disconnecting from the technological world that is so appealing to me.

When I go camping, I reconnect with nature. I feel apart of the world, rather than separated from it. I enjoy camping no matter where, a camp area with flush toilets, showers, fresh water, and electricity connection, or a primitive campsite in the back country with no amenities other than what you bring with you. Disconnecting from the day to day, unplugging from all the electronic devices that we are constantly holding on to, and getting back to nature is liberating.

Hiking is fun, but can also be very strenuous. I got in to hiking as an undergrad, during geology field trips and never got tired of it. I got tired, that is for sure, but I have never tired of going hiking. I like to push my physical limits, and I also like to get out of my comfort zone from time to time, and hiking does a spectacular job of doing both. Plus, there is the reward of getting to see something that not everyone gets to personally experience; like a grizzly cub falling out of a tree 10 meters away from you and running away while calling out for mama. Or the amazing vistas, or hidden gems that are usually found at the end of a trail.

Below, I have put together another slideshow of some campsites, and some hikes that I have been on.
